4-1 isn’t a rivalry. Unless you agree that Snape was this very powerful wizard and could hold himself at 11, but then his worst memory wouldn’t have happened…
Although, I do agree with you that his treatment of his students was beyond atrocious, someone wrote an interesting post of it being of its time. (Something to consider but by all means not excuse)
You’re also talking about the same man, Dumbledore, who hired Lockhart and Lupin (I absolutely love Remus!) but both of which put students in physical danger.

in fact snape was very powerful wizard who came up with various dangerous spells that could easily defend him against rivals for example ‘sectumsempra’ as much as i agree that the marauders were harsh against snape not the extent everyone believes e.g calling it abuse snape was just as harsh back therefore making it a rivalry. 

regarding the “being of its time” thing although i can say i wasn’t in the school in the 90′s and are unaware of the way teachers treated students i don’t believe snape should be justified with that due to his treatment towards his own house and then every other house. snape never treated slytherin in that way so he knew how to be a good teacher but due to past grudges and pettiness he was a complete dick who bullied young children. 

also i’m not sure where in this post it mentioned anything about lockheart but many know he was a horrible teacher hired by Dumbledore but no one brings it up as people aren’t so committed as to argue against that. we all agree dumbeldore should be prosecuted for hiring such incompetent teachers to work around children.

also would you like to share me with what evidence you have that lupin put students in physical danger because from my view he did everything in his power to prevent that from happening e.g drinking wolfsbane e.c.t.

You raised some great points.
In no way was I trying to say that Snape’s behaviour being of it’s time is a justification, just something to consider. Particularly: Why does Snape act like that and why didn’t the other staff members do anything about his behaviour IF it was so appalling (to me, and other Snape fans would agree, the behaviour IS appalling).

I brought up Lockheart and Lupin more as a way to show Dumbledore’s behaviour in hiring staff (he hired an incompetent man who put students in danger, he then hired a werewolf and he also hired a former DE who bullied students).

Remus was an AMAZING teacher! I’m not denying that. However, he did put students in danger by not reporting that Sirius was an animagus when he believed Sirius was a convicted murderer and was after Harry. He also forgot to take the wolfsbane potion.

Oh of course, i completely understand i don’t disagree that Dumbledore choices of teachers was horrific. However, i believe lupin was a good teacher who did actually teach them stuff. (i thought Dumbledore knew what Sirius was?) i believe if he had stayed past the Sirius incident and snape hadn’t told people what it was he would have been the best teacher they had.
